Day 17: Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside…

A (vaguely) sunny (for October) day can demand only one thing: a trip to the seaside. We headed off to Mersea for a walk on the sand, a platter of oysters, and a spot of beach-combing.

First stop by the time we got there was some lunch. Tom had fish and chips, but I went straight for the salty protein – with a platter of nine fresh Mersea oysters. The place is famous for them, and they didn’t disappoint. I love an oyster, but they have to fresh fresh fresh to really delight, and these certainly were and did!

Okay, so it might not look like the brightest of days, and there was a little bit of cloud. And, no, it wasn’t the warmest, but it wasn’t the coldest either. Perfect weather for a gentle stroll along the sand, picking up shells and pretty stones. I came away with a whole bagful, which will probably end up jazzing up a flower-bed, or maybe part of a collage (since I caught the bug last week!).

There’s something so reinvigorating about seeing the waves, and feeling the soft but steady embrace of the sand. And somehow I cannot resist returning to childhood, wanting to dam the streams and make sandcastles around the ensuing lake!
