Day 43: Movie magic
A trip to the movies made for my play on Friday. Arrival was the chosen film (and one that I’d certainly recommend).
There’s something qualitatively different in the experience of heading off to the cinema, having spent ten minutes choosing the perfect seats online, getting in and smelling the popcorn going stale and those strange blue industrial carpets. It’s not sitting at home and seeing what’s on the box. It isn’t Netlfix and Chill.
I love the ability for films to transport you into a different world. They can be immersive and take over the whole of your experience. For a while you have to leave your troubles outside the room, and learn of someone else’s tragedy, or hilarious occurrences, sporting prowess or biographical journey.
Isn’t that the very essence of play? To be away from yourself for a while, in a better, happier place?
Of course: there are also terrible movies. They’re often not much fun at all.
A film is – or should be – more like music than like fiction. It should be a progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what’s behind the emotion, the meaning, all that comes later. – Stanley Kubrick
