Day 55: Podcasting the night away

I used to really hate the sound of my own voice. I know most people find it pretty odd when they hear recordings of themselves, but this was close to a phobia of it. It would make my skin crawl. To be fair, it has gotten a lot better over the years, and I certainly wouldn’t have agreed to be recorded for a Podcast if it was still as bad as it has been. That said, it’s still quite a way outside my comfort zone. Which means: the perfect candidate for Play!

I was really excited to be asked by Kara Stewart Fortier to appear on her brilliant podcast PlayGrounding. It’s always such a privilege to share my experiences of play with others, especially with someone as passionate about and interested in play as Kara.

Kara’s based in LA, so we had to choose a time that would work with the eight hour time difference. So it was my evening and her bright and breezy morning when we talked. I’m not going to go much into the content of the show (you’ll have to listen to it once it’s uploaded in a week or so), but needless to say we batted around different conceptions of play, what it is, how it works, and how to integrate it into our lives.

One thing that was really interesting for me to learn, and yet so obvious conceptually, is that the activity of recording a podcast is a mile away from hearing your own voice recorded. After all, I could just never listen to it (don’t worry, Kara, I will!), so these are very distinct things. How funny that I’d never spotted that before.

It’s safe to say I’m a comedy nerd. I listen to so many podcasts. I just love to laugh. – Allison Williams
