Day 60: How does your garden grow?

Gardening? In December? Why yes!

Obviously there’s plenty of things you can plant this late in the year, but I’ll still admit to being a bit intimidated when I put ‘gardening’ on my list of play activities. But research has shown that gardening is the only hobby that reduces stress, so it’s a high contender to be included in my 100 Days of Play.

So when I finished an avocado for my breakfast and was about to throw away the stone I realised I could jump on this opportunity. This is indoor gardening, and doesn’t require soil in the early stages, so it’s an easy and fun one for everyone to try at home. (Hint: yes, this means you!)

A quick web search informs me you need to clean all the fruit off (apparently mould is the biggest threat to your baby-cado’s survival), but avoid damaging the outer layer of skin. Opinions differ about slashing the top to help the seedling emerge. I choose to believe that avocado seeds have been sprouting for a long time without needing human intervention so don’t slash it… before piercing the sides with cocktails sticks and suspending it over a jam-jar of water.

I don’t actually have cocktail sticks, so I use snapped-shorter skewers. Gardening and creative invention. Perfect play!
