Day 61: Playing with dough
I have never made playdough. There: I’ve said it! I’ve made dough, and baked it, but not the remains-cold, just for having fun with kind. So my 100 Days of Play seemed the perfect time to have a little experiment with doing so.
I found a recipe online, and was (to be honest) a bit surprised at how simple it seemed to be. Just flour, salt, water and oil, with food colouring to create different colours. I gathered the ingredients, decided I’d make half a portion (the recipe called for 500g of flour – that’s a good old loaf of bread – so I thought half that would give me enough to play with).

Disaster struck when I found that I had NO food colouring! I guess in one of my clean-ups I’d discovered it was all ‘Best Before’ sometime last century (I rarely have use for garish-hues), and thrown it out. Does food-colouring go off?
But I haven’t been playing daily for two months without nurturing my creative invention! ‘Turmeric,’ I thought, and sure enough, a few teaspoons gave the dough a bright yellow hue, and a rather pleasant aroma. My friend James suggested that it would stain my hands yellow, but so far so good.

It’s all edible ingredients, though you wouldn’t want to consume the stuff – I’m not sure the taste of pure turmeric and salt is terribly delicious – despite what cheap curry houses might try to tell you. But it does mean that I can make use of potato mashers and forks to sculpt and enjoy.
But, in the end, a palm print is my favourite creation!
