Day 69: Cheese fail; cheese success!

I was intending for this Wednesday’s play to involve cheese-tasting. Borough Market (London’s posh artisan food market) was hosting its annual Cheese Evening, open late with lots of cheesemongers showcasing their wares.

Sadly, this turns out to have been everyone else in London’s intention too! Facebook showed that 18,000 people had indicated they were going to go (granted, it’s a free event) and thousands did in fact turn up. Queues 30 deep meant there was no chance of my getting even a whiff of cheese. It was hard enough to find my friends who I was meeting there.

But the evening was saved by the kindness of one of these friends, who invited the group back to his house for some food and, yes, cheese! Did I mention he was Italian? So we had spectacular pasta with ricotta and tomatoes, that we all gobbled down so quickly I forgot to take any photos, and then a glorious cheeseboard. And aperol spritzes. And limoncello!

Most importantly, and here’s the real fun: as well as breaking bread, we indulged in one of my favourite forms of play: meandering conversation! We spent the hours chatting about this and that as the whim took us. Cheese fail turned to cheese joy!
