Day 84: Take a hike!
At some point, probably when I’ve finished my 100 Days of Play challenge, I need to write something about how I came to choose the activities that I have. One part of it is that I haven’t especially gone for the sort of ‘Play for Grown-ups’ that, well, grown-ups might tend to be expected to indulge in. There are a few reasons for that, not least that they’re often ‘expertise hobbies’ and also because they can be harder to organise.
What’s also true is that, for the most part, I’ve been trying to really discover my own play, and that means stepping outside the sort of activities that I might go for in my everyday ‘adult life’, and embracing play that is normally reserved for children.
All of which is a long preamble to say I went for that most lifelong of play activities: going on a hike!

Despite being very close to the end of the year, it was not only a pretty mild day, but also a gloriously sunny one. Being in the Peak District for the New Year’s period, we headed into the mountains to walk up Win Hill, having rejected the next-door Lose Hill – no joke!
We walked and chatted and worked up an appetite, and ate our sandwiches with a view out over the gorgeously green countryside under a blue, blue sky (did I mention it was late December?). As we walked we made up jokes, caught up on work lives, home lives, mutual friendships, plans for the new year.
Challenging and a good workout, and also calming and mindful. The perfect play for outdoors-adults.

What I do like is hiking. And that’s what filmmaking is. It’s a hike. It’s challenging and exhausting, and you don’t know what the terrain is going to be or necessarily even which direction you’re going in… but it sure is beautiful. – Joss Whedon
