Day 6: No Nia miss

Movement, reimagined.

I’d never heard of the Nia Technique, but was intrigued by the ‘Freedom From Form’ session as part of KCL’s Play festival, which promised to play with movement. It turns out that Nia is a fitness lifestyle technique that aims to develop your own body’s comfort and boundaries, combining dance, martial-arts and holistic influences.

The session itself was great fun, exhausting, and a real opportunity to experiment. We played with stance, flexibility, moving in community, and along to the rhythms of the music. Starting easily, and always within our own choice of how far to take each motion, it was straightforward to get started, and everyone was soon free and rushing around the room in a playful manner.

I always forget how much I love to dance. Perhaps Nia could be the outlet for that enjoyment? Or it might just inspire me to find another class I’d like to go to!

Ease of play: 6/10 (could be intimidating)

Resemblance to play: 6/10

Aggression: Low

Speed: Fast

Enjoyability: High

Potential frequency of play: Low (weekly classes)
